Some people live forever through the work they leave behind.
Some reach across a thousand years to creatively inspire others.
Some are discovered decades after they depart, and some wait in obscurity.
Yana Filkovsky-Saito is waiting to be discovered “someday.”

Yana was driven by a strong desire to connect with others, despite being shy since she was a child.
Her struggles with psychiatric conditions began early, and continued her whole life.
Brilliant and creative, she excelled at academics.
She had a very wild imagination, and an exceptional sense of humor.
Her eccentricities sometimes put her at odds with the world, but added to her charm and originality.
She could be difficult, even weird, but inspired devotion in her friends.
She was highly disciplined, and held onto her pride, despite challenges.
"Don't give up so easily," Yana once told a close friend. This advice still whispers in her friend's ears.
No matter how bad her condition became, Yana worked constantly at her art.
Yana's artwork reflects her character: strong but gentle, one of a kind, strange and beautiful.
“Love and Art is my life,” Yana would say. This love gave her strength to fight when her illness worsened.
She kept working, even on her last day, striving for the elusive “someday.”

Yana Filkovsky-Saito passed away in her sleep on August 2nd, 2015.
The cause of death is unknown. She was only 37.  Hers was a sort of half-life.
She packed her “Love and Art” into her “Half-life-time-capsules.”
Yana's second "half-life” is to inspire others with her “Love and Art,” which I hope she will evoke in your heart.

I would like to thank you for supporting Yana.
As her illness was getting worse, she became more difficult to deal with.
It was very hard for people who love Yana.
She really fought hard against her illness. I am proud of her.
I fought Yana's illness together with her as hard as it was humanly possible. I am also proud of myself.
I also have regrets and I will blame myself for a while, because I'm human.

Love and art was Yana's life.
She was beautiful, the sweetest and most gentle soul I have ever seen in my life.
She cared so much about everyone. And she was strong.
Regardless of how much worse her condition got, Yana kept creating.
She was such an inspiration to me! I learned so much from her!
She even helped me quit drinking and she awoke creativity in me.

Yana used to tell me that I would be a beautiful old man with long white hair and a white beard.
Some day when I meet Yana again, as this old man, I will thank her.
Thanks to Yana, I became stronger, more responsible and more sensitive. I am confident about my future.

Some day I will hold events for Yana, such as an art exhibit for a good cause.
I hope to see you there.

Thanks,
